Reply with quote | #1 | We just finished our one day cardiac cathlab conference. Dr Neil Strathmore was one of the featured speakers. He said "NEVER" say "JUST" a replacement , and then went on to speak about a higher risk of infection as opposed to new implant. It was sooo relevant, the next day a staff member said the next case is "just a replacement". I could not help myself, I blurted out "wash your mouth out with soap! NEVER say that again!". I turned around and one of the Big Boss Dr's was just behind me. He did not say a word but I am suspect he would have been an astute observer.
Take home message - meticulous attention to asepsis, especially when it is a replacement & also prophylactic antibiotics are just that - prophylactic. Ie right dose / type and Before the procedure. Neil also said, I would rather lose a friendship than have a patient die from infection. Reminds me that our patients ( and Drs ) are real people and not a "just a case".
